Merry Christmas!
Posted by datacrush under Rave
Christmas just feels joyful. There is much evidence to this claim, and many variance to its factors; three of which I would discuss today.
Kids primarily enjoy Christmas because of the gifts they would receive. The idea of Santa Claus excites them. That is, until they figure reindeer doesn’t travel as fast as it should to cover 12.76 x 106 meters wide in 24 hours period even at ~c/1 = ~c.
He could travel at c, which then time would stood still according to Relativity, but anything that travels at that speed as we know it doesn’t carry mass, which would be tough for Santa because he’s bloated with mass and oppressed by gravity.
By the way, if you still have not figured out the value of c by now, you would probably think Dihydrogen Monoxide is dangerous for you too.
Guys love Christmas just because it’s the most laidback time of the year. Pesky co-workers may send e-mails, and bosses may call, but it’s safe to bet that for once in a year it’s a Christmas greeting.
Now, a woman’s affection and enthusiasm of Christmas has a much deeper, passionate and purposeful meaning. It’s so significant that its epiphany requires a careful context-based euphemism, it’s difficult to explain. A woman’s joy in Christmas is mostly this: pre-Christmas sales, Christmas sales, and post-Christmas sales.
Just kidding.
While commerce may seem to have an important effect, it’s good to know that over two thousand years ago an angel came and announced the first Christmas joy. Luke 2:8-14 may be the most quoted verse regarding that event:
There were sheepherders camping in the neighborhood. They had set night watches over their sheep. Suddenly, God’s angel stood among them and God’s glory blazed around them. They were terrified. The angel said, “Don’t be afraid. I’m here to announce a great and joyful event that is meant for everybody, worldwide: A Savior has just been born in David’s town, a Savior who is Messiah and Master. This is what you’re to look for: a baby wrapped in a blanket and lying in a manger.”
At once the angel was joined by a huge angelic choir singing God’s praises:
Glory to God in the heavenly heights,
Peace to all men and women on earth who please him.
Christmas may be a social thing, but it’s not all about the gifts. A friend of mine recently introduced me to Sean Dietrich website. All his songs are free, and he’s a fine musician. One of his songs titled Stuff talks about how he’d like a new car, but then he’d want a nice house to park his new car, and he went on to describe that he’d like a yacht but then he’d need an island to park his new yacht.
The human desire for material gains can never be quenched. Sometimes we just have to be satisfied with what we’ve got.
Christmas may be the best season of the year, but only because someone had contributed first. Do something special for someone else this Christmas season. Decorate someone else’s home with Christmas tree and lights, buy a Christmas gift (not for yourself), go Christmas caroling (not by yourself), or simply write a Christmas greeting card (not to yourself). Do whatever it takes to reward someone else.
Maybe at the end of the day, there is such thing as a modern day Christmas miracle after all. Merry Christmas all!
