Santa and Reindeer

There are many stories written about Santa Claus, few made it to the big screen. They all talk about this fat guy in red coat with long white beard.

Santa is an iconic Christmas character. We all know who he is, what he does, and where he lives. We also know he has a company of underpaid jolly working elves as his merry indentured servants.

We know his background, but what we couldn’t figure out is, how does he deliver toys around the planet so fast? And we know his favorite delivery channel is through the chimney, but how does a round-bellied person like him get through the vent?

This is the age-old questions that require answers. Instead of spending research money on whether or not bees can think, or whether puppies have an IQ of a 6 months old child, biochemist and astrophysicist should look into solving this ancient riddle. It’s at about the same par as whether a werewolf would constantly be a wolf if we were to land one on the moon, and if so, which side of the moon?

Such research cannot be any more degrading than sending a layman hitching a ride on a Russian spacecraft to play traditional game and eat gas inducing food under microgravity environment.

Reality is stranger than fiction, but the image of gifts bearing Santa we have today is based on true persons. That’s right kids! An infusion of multiple personalities seasoned with myths.

Saint Nicholas may well be the historical figure of Santa, and with a little help of folklore mythology he had identity reinforcement as Sinterklaas which lives on until today. But the true image of Father Christmas is truly Father God, when he gave His only Son, Jesus as gift to mankind. The greatest gift is salvation and eternal life (John 1:12).

And I think it’s really cool that we give gifts on Christmas, in solace that we first received.

Santa Claus is not a religious idea. It is a society’s ideal, and although it takes on a form of conformation to Christianity, like Easter Bunny, it’s just a splendidly decorated bowl of fruit punch among eggnogs. As a symbol of good character, hope, and generosity, Santa edifies Christmas spirit without diminishing the message, the substance and the source of Christmas, which is Jesus Himself.

Christmas is always an enjoyable part of the year. Earlier this week, I’ve had the pleasure of setting up a Christmas tree in the lobby of a hotel that I’ve been staying in for a good span of the year. I had some help, but I had to figure it out from ground up for most part. I even had to drag it out of the hotel’s store room, cheerfully with satisfaction, and that’s my Christmas spirit contribution.

While Santa Claus may be fictional, the rewards of Christmas are totally tangible and real. You all have 10 days left for Christmas gift shopping, so go!
